Yamada Asaemon Kiyomaru (山田浅ェ門 (きよ) (まる) ) was an unranked Asaemon in the Yamada Clan. After the shogun became impatient of the first team acquiring the Elixir of Life from Kotaku, Kiyomaru and Isuzu were chosen to join Shugen and Jikka to be a part of the second team sent to acquire the elixir. In addition, the group was ordered by Shugen to eliminate the criminals of the first team, as well as every being on the island, and protect the monitoring Yamada Asaemons.

Appearance[]

Kiyomaru was a child with wavy hair that was brushed over to the right side of his face. He wore a dark kataginu on top of the standard attire of an Asaemon; a white robe, a hakama, a red waist cord that holds his sword at his hip, a bell tied to his left collar, and sandals.

Personality[]

Due to his young age, Kiyomaru was very immature, shown as he spoke rudely to one of his superiors and recklessly ordered one ninja to kill himself to prove his loyalty. Kiyomaru was also very arrogant and disapproved of being looked down on by others, as he declared that he was far superior to everyone that came along on the mission and cut off a ninja's mask to prove his strength to Aoki after hearing him doubt his abilities for being an unranked Asaemon. Aside from his childhood behavior, Kiyomaru was very loyal to Shugen and would do anything he commanded.

History[]

Kiyomaru was born as the son of a samurai and was taken in by the Yamada clan within the Side Branch Dōjō. He then met and trained with Yamada Asaemon Shugen who he pledged loyalty towards after the Yamada Asaemon treated him with respect.

Treasure Barge

The additional landing party make their arrival on Kotaku.

While sailing off, Kiyomaru overhears Aoki having concerns about his and Isuzu's position as being unranked Asaemon. Kiyomaru becomes annoyed and rudely offers him to demonstrate his skills, causing Isuzu to ask that he behaves himself. He looks towards one of the ninjas on board and boasts about his superiority. After the ninja allowed him to do as he please to him, Kiyomaru draws his sword and slices another ninja's mask to see if the first one moved. Isuzu then draws her sword next to Kiyomaru neck and strictly demands that he behaves himself. He then looks back at Isuzu with a cold expression and tells her not to test him. Isuzu apologies to the ninja for Kiyomaru's behavior but the ninja states that he had no problems since it was their duty to follow their orders no matter what. Hearing this statement, Kiyomaru orders the ninja to kill himself to proof his loyalty. He becomes shocked to see the ninja following his orders and kills himself. He then goes to Shugen and asked if they can trust the ninjas. Shugen tells him that he views them no more than criminals and that they are more than enough to handle the mission and expresses his resolve to execute every criminal on the island so his clan members can return home. After asking the possibility of the clan members death, Kiyomaru becomes scared of an angered Shugen. The group then makes their arrival on Kotaku.

Isuzu and Kiyomaru vs Monshin

After finally making landfall on the island, Kiyomaru and Isuzu watches as Shugen defeats a group of Sōshin without the use of his sword and comes to his aid to see if he is injured. Shugen assures them that as their senior he will take care of lesser matters that do not involve their purpose as executioners. This causes the two to feel delighted but Kiyomaru comments on how his smiles makes him look scary. As they continue to forward, the group stumbles upon Eizen's corpse, causing Shugen to cry in anguish. Kiyomaru and Isuzu then join Shugen in laying Eizen's dead body to rest but are shortly interrupted by a horde of Monshin commanded by a Dōshi. As one of the Monshin prepares to attack Shugen, Kiyomaru and Isuzu protects him and attack. However, one manages to slip past them and goes straight for Shugen. Shugen notices the monster and cuts its legs, reliving both Kiyomaru and Isuzu. They then watch as Shugen damages his sword and declares vengeance for Eizen's death.

While traveling to Hōrai, the Asaemon become exhausted with the long walk and are informed by Shugen that he would use the Horse Flute formerly used by the Dōshi. Kiyomaru then wonders what he was talking about. After the ninja presented evidence of Tenza and Genji's death, Shugen becomes furious and uses the whistle. Kiyomaru asks what the whistle was for and is told by Jikka that it is meant to summon the Monshin from their nest, much to his shock. Shugen then commands them to quickly carry him and the Asaemon to Hōrai.

Two teams united

The two landing parties join forces.

After arriving in Hōrai, Kiyomaru follow Shugen's lead and soon confronts Nurugai, alongside Yamada Asaemon Shion at her side, to capture her as per Shugen's orders to eliminate any convicts they find. He then becomes ashamed of Shion for trying to protect a criminal and becomes astonished to hear him renouncing his title as a Yamada Asaemon since he can not bring himself to execute an innocent such as Nurugai. Later, Kiyomaru and everyone in Hōrai witness the palace being taken over after Zhu Jin fuses with the Banko. With everyone's life at risk, Kiyomaru, along with the other survivors from the first and second landing parties, gather at the Rentan Temple to discuss matters on cooperating. After discussing the plan to destroy the Banko's tandens scattered around Hōrai, Kiyomaru pairs up with Isuzu to strengthen her Water Tao with his Metal Tao and goes after the tandens.

Isuzu and Kiyomaru at the Fire Tanden

Kiyomaru and Isuzu prepare to destroy the Banko's Fire tanden.

As they make their way to the Shu'itsu Temple where the Fire tanden is located, Kiyomaru hears Isuzu talk about how the situation they are in required them to cooperate with criminals and berates her for this response, thinking that she is doubting Shugen. As he fights off the monsters, Kiyomaru explains his reason for believing in Shugen and tells her to honor her loyalty towards him after reminding her of the time Shugen stood up for her in the past. Isuzu then thanks Kiyomaru for reassuring her and the two arrive at the Shu'itsu Temple. Shortly after, Kiyomaru and Isuzu defend themselves against clones of Ju Fa created by the tanden after Zhu Jin becomes aware of the humans interference. Later, after the sound of the next conch signal by Yuzuriha, Kiyomaru and Isuzu perform the coordinated attack to destroy the Zhu Jin-fused Banko. Though they were successful, the tandens start to slowly regenerate due to the Zhu Jin-fused Banko slowly recovering from the morning sunlight. Luckily, Aza Chōbei comes up with the idea of using his vines to destroy the roots of the tandens in order to cut off its regeneration link to the main body, resulting in the Zhu Jin-fused Banko's destruction.

Not wanting to allow the monster to take away the Yamada clan's duty of executing the criminals, Kiyomaru and Isuzu receive orders from Shugen to get the criminals to safety on the other boats. However, Rien unleashes her power to dismantle the exterior of the ship, causing the lumber to scattered. As a result, Kiyomaru is killed after his body is crushed under a piece of the wreckage, much to Sagiri and Isuzu's shock.

Abilities and Powers[]

Despite being an unranked Asaemon, Kiyomaru was undoubtedly skilled as he was chosen to be a part of the second team to journey off and retrieve the Elixir of Life. According to Shugen, Kiyomaru had the potential of receiving the first or second rank. He was capable of defeating a group of Monshin, a feat Rien noted was anything but normal for a human, and kept them at bay from attacking Shugen. He was capable enough to take on the monsters created by the Zhu Jin-fused Banko that were able to kill a squad of Iwagakure genin and assisted Isuzu in defeating the partially transformed clones of Ju Fa. Ultimately, he became one of the known survivors to escape the dangerous island known as Kotaku that has brought many humans to their death for over 1,000 years.
