Moro Makiya ( () () (まき) () ), also known as The Apostate (ころび伴天連, Korobi Bateren), was a well-known criminal who was put on death row. However, before receiving the death penalty for his arrest, Makiya became recruited to join in an expedition team where he would compete against other death row convicts in acquiring the Elixir of Life for the shogun from an island believed to be Shinsenkyō in exchange for a pardon that would exempt him of his past crimes.

Makiya was a man with short hair that was braided from the back, prominent eyelashes and lips. He also had slightly pointed ears that had three piercings and sharp nails. He wore a dark jacket with a large collar. Underneath he wore a shirt and a necklace with an upside down cross.

Makiya was known to be an individual who was quite ambitious and manipulative, having brainwashed people into believing his fabricated religion in order to overthrow the shogun. He was also susceptible to a woman's charms, which end up leading to his death after easily being taken advantage of by Yuzuriha.

Makiya also spoke with a tone of a woman.[2]

At some point, Makiya developed an ambition to overthrow the shogun and went about it by forming a cult that was based off of multiple religions. Eventually, he was arrested by the authorities and was given the death penalty, however, Makiya was offered by Yamada Asaemon Genji a chance to be pardon for his crimes if he were to complete a mission that required him to venture to an island that is said to possess the Elixir of Life and return back with it for the shogun to consume. Having favored this option, Makiya agreed to participate.

Island Arc[]

Upon agreeing to the mission, Makiya is taken to a gathering spot were other death row criminals are interested in joining the expedition. After they were told to start a massacre until only a few were available to leave for the island, Makiya becomes one out of the ten criminals to survive and is assigned Yamada Asaemon Genji as his monitor.

After making landfall, Makiya encounters Yuzuriha who wishes to form a alliance. He agrees to this but is used by the kunoichi as bait to gain intel on the nature of the human-faced insects. His body then becomes a blooming corpse and is left to be consumed by the human-faced centipedes.

As a death row criminal, Makiya was considered to be a man who was too dangerous to be left alive. He was known to be very skilled in manipulation that allowed him to create a religious cult. He was also capable of surviving a killing spree full of criminals who were also marked for death. In terms of defending himself, Makiya possessed sharp nails that he used to inflict harm to his opponents.

  • Makiya's given name has the Kunyomi reading for "to herd (livestock)" (牧 maki) and an interrogative particle (耶 ya).
    • His surname has the Go-on'yomi reading for "overgrown, lush" (茂 mo), and the Kan-on'yomi reading for "basket, cage" (籠 ).

  • Makiya shares the same birthday with Hōko.
