Kotaku (こたく Kotaku?), or Shinsenkyō (神仙郷? Literally meaning: Divine Paradise), is an island located within the seas of the southwest which holds the Elixir of Life. The island is under the rule of seven immortal beings called Lord Tensen. Kotaku is the main setting throughout the series.
History
After the Great Hermit, Lord Tensen, reached enlightenment he was split into seven immortal bodies. The seven used his name and ruled over Kotaku.
Over 1,000 years ago, the inhabitants of Kotaku underwent Arborification. After the Arborification, they all traveled to Hōrai and sat in a Zazen pose, leaving the village in ruins. However, one villager named Hōko regained consciousness and found Mei. The two later became the only living residents of the village.
Culture
Kotaku derives from two religions: Taoism and Buddhism. The man-made statues on the island combines these two religions, although according to Senta they are executed poorly. The Sōshin also take attributes from these religions.
Layout
Kotaku is divided into three regions: Eishū, Hōjō, and Hōrai.
Eishū
Eishū (えいしゅう Eishū?) is the outer region of the island, which holds the forest and the beach. The forest is covered in plant life, mainly due to the blooming corpses of samurai that last ventured the island. The Sōshin are stationed in Eishu to eliminate any trespassers. The forest is also the main environment for the human faced insects.
Hōjō
- Further information: Hōjō
Hōjō (ほうじょう Hōjō?) is the second region of the island. A village can be found there but after the villagers underwent Aborification 1000 years ago, the village remains in ruins. Hōko and Mei are currently the only known people residing in the village.
Hōrai
- Further information: Hōrai
Hōrai (ほうらい Hōrai?) is located at the center of the island and is where Lord Tensen resides, as well as the Dōshi. It currently holds the magical remedy that grants immortality known as Tan.

- In Senta's opinion, because Kotaku takes religions from the outside world, it cannot be viewed as Shinsenkyō.
